Welcome to my Galileo wiki. As you may know, Galileo Galilei was a very important astronomer from Italy. He lived during the 1600's, when people believed all of Aristotle's ideas. Well, Galileo disproved most of those theories, but the Church wouldn't accept that. They forced him to recant his studies, and put him under house arrest. Only his faithful students believed him. While under house arrest, he had the opportunity to continue his studies, and write it down in his famous book In the end, he died in his home in the year 1642, but before that, he had made many very important discoveries, that were only pardoned by the Church in 1992. His great discoveries were...
CRATERS ON THE MOON:
craters on the moon
Galileo found out that there were craters on the moon by observing the moon through his telescope. He saw that there were craters on it, and Aristotle had said that everything in the solar system was perfect, so what were these craters? He used geometry to discover that these craters were actually mountains and valleys, thus disproving Aristotle's studies
JUPITER'S MOONS:
Aristotle thought that Earth was the center of the universe, and everything revolved around us, so nothing could revolve around anything else. Galileo was looking at jupiter through his telescope one night and he saw four little objects next to jupiter, so he drew what he saw. The next night, he did the same thing, but the objects looked like they had moved! Galileo continued to draw the objects around Jupiter every night, until he had made a little flip book. Looking through it, he saw that the objects WERE moving, but not around Earth like they should be. These objects were revolving around Jupiter! Galileo named the stars after the Prince Cosimo d'Medici, which would have given him fame and riches, but the Medician court didn't want to think that Aristotle was wrong, so they disregarded the moons of Jupiter.
